Welcome to Greece — A Sweet Start to My Travel Baking Journey

Yassas! 👋 Welcome to the first post of my new blog—an adventure where flour meets passport stamps. I’ve always believed food tells the richest stories, and what better way to explore the world than through the warmth of an oven?

Why Travel Baking?

I’ve always been a traveler with a sweet tooth and a baker with wanderlust. Whether it’s the scent of cinnamon in a bustling market or a pastry that melts into a memory, baking gives me a chance to explore the soul of a place from home. This blog is my way of mixing cultures into cookie dough, layering traditions like phyllo, and letting stories rise like bread.

Each week, I’ll post a new recipe inspired by a different place and the plan is to stick with this country for the following four weeks (plus or minus a week). We’ll be kicking off this baking adventure with Greece!

Why Greece?

After visiting Greece several times, it’s become my favorite place to visit. I’ve been missing Greece lately, so it felt like the perfect starting point.

Greece’s desserts are rich with history, and every bite carries a sense of place—citrus groves, whitewashed villages, noisy cafés by the sea. Greek pastries are both rustic and elegant, wrapped in layers of tradition (and often syrup-soaked phyllo- so much yummy).

From the crisp, golden swirls of koulourakia to the sticky perfection of baklava, I’ll be baking my way through four classic Greek desserts this month.

Each post will include:

  • A tested, photo-rich recipe
  • A little cultural and historical context
  • Personal reflections and travel inspiration

If you’ve never made Greek sweets before—don’t worry. This will be my first attempt at most of these recipes, so I’m sure to have some bloopers along the way for us all to laugh at, but I’ll walk you through it, step-by-step, with kitchen-tested tips. And if you have, I hope you’ll rediscover them in a new light and maybe be inspired to throw on your apron.

Coming This Month:

🌀 Baklava Bliss: Greece’s flakiest, stickiest superstar
🌿 Koulourakia: Braided Easter cookies full of charm
🍊 Portokalopita: Orange pie that smells like summer
🧀 Aegean Cheese Pie (Tyropita): Feta + phyllo = magic

I’m so excited you’re here. Pour yourself some Greek coffee, preheat the oven, and let’s get baking.
